Community Brand in a Community Hospital

Portsmouth, NH has a 400+ year seafaring tradition, as well as a rich creative culture. This tightly-knit community loves the ocean, art and their town, and Image 4 brought both together for Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Project Overview

JSA Architects commissioned Image 4 to develop a contemporary Brand Presentation for the newly-constructed, award-winning Atrium entrance to Portsmouth Regional Hospital. The space is filled with natural light, and the 22-foot high skylight ceiling creates a welcoming space for patients, their families and staff members.

Working with JSA’s designer, our assignment was to devise a scheme reflective of city’s longtime seagoing heritage (still very much active today), and to create a display system to support rotating art exhibitions. The large-scale assembly set the tone for smaller alcove display through the building.

Image 4 scanned, retouched and printed a historic navigation chart, and installed the graphic wallcovering at large-scale: 22×22 feet. A custom-designed and fabricated display system is installed over the map. The NH Pine wooden beams are hand-finished to allude to ship timbers, and the assembly is scalable in 2 planes. The system allows for changeable display of works of local artists.

Elsewhere in the building, alcoves provide display spaces. Graphic installations of historic and contemporary imagery and display cases of seafaring artifacts evoke the seafaring Brand of Portsmouth, NH.

The award-winning project has put Portsmouth Hospital on the map.
